The simmering yet sensitive issue that most Punjabis are hesitant to bring up is flared by Hawayein, the film that audaciously relives post Operation Bluestar riots in the national capital and the aftermath that scarred Punjab for years. In conversation with the actor duo who also double up as director and music director, respectively, Chandigarh Times gets a slice of history from these men who clenched staunchly to the subject against the winds. 'This disturbing bit of the history is not to be evaded,' says director and protagonist Ammtoje Mann, who has passionately researched the subject and devoted three years on writing the script. 'It was a Herculean task to find producers and financiers for this film since they thought that the script was controversial. They were ready to invest money in any other storyline than this because the biggest apprehension was that the movie might not even get censorship. Unfortunately, hard facts are either obliterated from history or banned if someone tries to recollect those,' adds Mann.
To be released all over the country this week, the movie is already getting rave reviews in Canada where it was released a week earlier. 'The subject is close to my heart since I have seen my close friends consumed in the communal fire and I even know the cops' side of the story as they were my friends too.

But Ammtoje's insistence and the theme of the movie prompted me to experiment and I am completely satisfied with my performance,' adds the singer whose Kabza track has already created a controversy. 'Actually Sikhs are a martial race and there is no harm in depicting that. I fail to understand why a Sikh should only be portrayed as a taxi driver or a humourist in films?'
Retorts Babbu Mann. 'The aim of the film is not to upset anyone. It is not provocative but educative as in that such incidents should not be repeated,' affirms Ammtoje who has acted in Naseebo and Dilip Kumar's unreleased Kalinga apart from directing music videos. The rest of the cast includes Tom Alter, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Mukul Dev and debutants Aanandi Tripathi and city girl Rimpy Gill.
